A l’occasion du 800ème anniversaire de sa naissance, la conciergerie propose dans une exposition de découvrir le parcours de ce souverain qui a marqué l’Europe. Roi de France à 12 ans jusqu’à sa mort en 1270, son influence de son vivant a largement dépassé les frontières du Royaume de France. Elle interroge encore aujourd’hui, être à la fois un monarque et un saint n’est-ce pas incompatible ?
L’exposition en trois parties, « Du saint à l’homme, parcours d’un mythe à rebours », « Du royaume terrestre à la Jérusalem terrestre » et « Le miroir du monde » essaye de répondre à cette question en révélant un peu plus l’homme qui se cache derrière le personnage.
130 œuvres remarquables sont exposées, issues des collections des plus grandes institutions culturelles françaises et étrangères : « bibles et psautiers enluminés, statuettes de bois ou d’ivoire (telle la magnifique Descente de croix du Louvre), reliquaires orfévrés, vitraux de la Sainte-Chapelle et leurs relevés grandeur nature à l’aquarelle… ». Elles témoignent de l’effervescence intellectuelle et artistique qui caractérisa son règne.
Une projection du passionnant film « Saint Louis à la lumière de la Sainte Chapelle » (l’une des importantes réalisations de son règne) est également proposée. La vidéo sortie récemment révèle certaines des dernières découvertes scientifiques faites sur la Sainte Chapelle et propose une lecture du mythe Saint Louis.
Enfin, les nouvelles technologies ne sont pas en reste, puisqu’une reconstitution en 3D de l’île de la Cité à l’époque est également proposée aux visiteurs.
The 800th anniversary of Saint Louis
On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of his birth, the Conciergerie invites visitors to discover the story of this king who left his mark on Europe. Louis IX, who was King of France from the age of 12 until his death in 1270, his influence went far beyond the borders of the Kingdom of France. The question which is still asked today is whether being a monarch is incompatible with being a saint?
The exhibition is in three parts, “From the Saint to the man, reversing the myth”, “From the earthly kingdom to the earthly Jerusalem” and “The mirror of the world”, and tries to answer this question by revealing a little more about the man behind the character.
130 remarkable works are exhibited, drawn from the biggest cultural institutions in France and abroad: “illuminated Bibles and psalters, statuettes in wood and ivory (such as the Louvre’s magnificent Descent from the Cross), intricate reliquaries, stained-glass windows from La Sainte-Chapelle and their life-sized models painted in watercolours”. These works bear witness to the intellectual and artistic effervescence which characterised his reign.
Visitors can also enjoy a screening of the fascinating film “Saint Louis in the light of La Sainte Chapelle” (one of the most significant creations of his reign). The video, which was recently released, reveals some of the latest scientific discoveries about La Sainte Chapelle and puts forward an interpretation of the myth of Saint Louis.
Finally, there is also a place in the exhibition for new technology, as visitors can enjoy a 3D reconstruction of the Île de la Cité at the time.
