La France est candidate à l’organisation de l’Exposition Universelle 2025. Plus d’un siècle après celle de 1889 qui avait vu l’arrivée de la tour Eiffel et l’inauguration de la première rame de métro dans la capitale, ou encore celle de 1900 qui avait attiré 50 millions de visiteurs, Paris cherche à accueillir un nouveau projet porté par le député-maire UDI de Neuilly, Jean Christophe Fromentin.
Voilà près de deux ans que M. Fromantin parcourt les routes de France pour mobiliser autour de cette perspective. Selon le site officiel de l’événement, plus de 1000 élus auraient déjà apporté leur soutien et 3270 personnalités au total, parmi lesquelles Maud Fontenoy ou encore Anne-Sophie Pic.
Le député Fromantin justifie la démarche de la manière suivante : «En ces temps de sinistrose et de crise économique, la France a besoin d’une telle candidature pour fédérer et retrouver confiance en sa force et ses atouts ». Par ailleurs, selon lui « il s’agit d’un projet qui avance très bien ». Présenté à la presse le 9 avril 2014, le projet demeure cependant encore un peu flou, même si plusieurs pistes semblent d’ores et déjà privilégiées :
– Utiliser les monuments existants
– Utiliser les prochaines infrastructures du grand Paris
L’idée serait par exemple de prêter un lieu emblématique à un pays pour qu’il le relooke à sa manière. La prochaine importante échéance est prévue pour 2016, date à laquelle le dossier de candidature devrait être déposé au bureau des expositions universelles. Selon un sondage IFOP réalisé pour Expo France, 84% des français soutiennent aujourd’hui le projet.
The 2025 Universal Exhibition
France is in the running for the organisation of the 2025 Universal Exhibition. Over a century after the 1889 World’s Fair at which the Eiffel Tower was unveiled and the first line of the capital’s metro system was inaugurated, and the 1900 Expo which attracted 50 million visitors, Paris hopes to welcome a new project fostered by Jean-Christophe Fromantin, MP for the Union of Democrats and Independents (UDI) and Mayor of Neuilly.
Mr Fromantin has been travelling all over France gathering support for the bid for almost two years. According to the event’s official site, over 1,000 councillors have already pledged their support alongside a total of 3,270 personalities including Maud Fontenoy and Anne-Sophie Pic.
Mr Fromantin justifies the application as follows: « In a time of pessimism and economic recession, France needs a bid like this to unite its people and rebuild confidence in its strengths and assets. » He adds, « The project is progressing well. » Announced to the press on 9 April 2014, however, the project still seems rather vague, even if a few lines of thought seem to have been established already:
– Making use of existing monuments
-Making use of the infrastructures created by the Grand Paris project
One example of the concept is to lend iconic sites to other countries to be « restyled » in their own ways. The next major deadline is scheduled for 2016, when the application must be delivered to the bureau of world’s fairs. According to a survey by polling firm IFOP for Expo France, 84% of French citizens are currently in support of the project.
