L’hôtel Byblos (*****), à Saint-Tropez, vient d’entrer, cet été, dans le cercle très fermé des « Palace » français. Ils sont 12 exactement, à ce jour : La Réserve à Ramatuelle, La Messardière et Le Byblos à Saint-Tropez, l’Hôtel du Palais à Biarritz, Les Airelles et Le Cheval Blanc à Courchevel, Le George V, Le Bristol, Le Meurice, Le Park Hyatt et Le Plaza Athénée à Paris, Le Grand-Hôtel à Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
Composé de 91 chambres dont 50 suites, le Byblos mérite sa réputation avec un restaurant ultra branché et un des clubs les plus selects du monde, « les Caves du Roy ». Inauguré en 1967 par Brigitte Bardot pour sa nuit de noce avec le milliardaire allemand Gunter Sachs, l´hôtel est situé au coeur du village de Saint-Tropez. Il a été conçu sur le modèle provençal avec ses façades ocres et bleues et une décoration ultra raffinée. Petites constructions accolées les unes aux autres, toitures en tuiles romaines bordées de génoises, balconnets de fer forgé, fontaines, placettes pavées, 400 espèces de plantes méditerranéennes, patio, piscine, etc. La cuisine gastronomique a les saveurs traditionnelles de la Riviera, de l’Italie, de l’Espagne, de la Tunisie, du Maroc et du Liban : tajines, poissons et viandes grillés, mesclun et roquette de pays à la tapenade, langoustines rôties, aiguillettes d’agneau de lait. La cave possède 300 vins du monde entier et de très grands crus. L´ensemble hôtelier est complété par un centre de détente et d’esthétique, une salle de gymnastique et des boutiques de prestige. Tout cela est plutôt parfait et le personnel est remarquable de savoir vivre.
Enfin, je ne résiste pas au plaisir de revenir, un instant, sur les Caves du Roy, la fameuse discothèque du Byblos. C’est, sans conteste, un des tous premiers club de France, si ce n´est le premier, bien avant les clubs parisiens et tous ceux de la Côte. L’ambiance y est fantastique en été. Le décor, très seventies, est kitchissime et la musique mixe tous les tubes d’électro-house avec les classiques des 70’s et 80’s. Un conseil : ne venez pas en jeans baskets, cela ne passe pas… En bref, le Byblos ? Un hôtel qui a su garder son caractère original et qui est désormais estampillé « Palace »!

L’Hôtel Byblos (5*) in Saint-Tropez became a member of the very select circle of French « palaces » this summer. With 91 rooms, 50 of which are suites, Le Byblos deserves its reputation with its extremely-stylish restaurant and one of the most exclusive clubs in the world, the « Caves du Roy ». Opened in 1967 by Brigitte Bardot for her honeymoon with the German billionaire Gunter Sachs, the hotel is located in the heart of the village of Saint-Tropez. It was designed in a Provençal style with ochre and blue facades and highly sophisticated interiors. Little buildings lie side by side, with Génoise-style edging to the Roman-tiled rooftops, there are small wrought-iron balconies, fountains, small cobbled squares, 400 different species of Mediterranean plant life, a patio, a pool, etc. The gourmet cuisine includes traditional dishes from the Riviera, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Morocco and the Lebanon: tajines, grilled fish and meat, local mesclun and rocket with tapenade, roasted rock lobster, suckling lamb aiguillettes. The wine cellar boasts 300 wines from around the world including some very great vintages. There is a well-being and beauty centre attached to the hotel, as well as a gym and a selection of luxury boutiques. It all appears rather flawless on the whole, with staff acquainted with the art of living. A few friends with somewhat ready tongues have told me that occasionally the cleanliness of the corridors leaves something to be desired and that the rooms may be in need of a little dusting. Can that be possible? I find it hard to believe…
Lastly, I can’t resist the pleasure of mentioning the Caves du Roy, the Byblos’ renowned discotheque, once again. It is without a doubt one of the very first clubs in France, if not the first one, well before the clubs in Paris and those on the Riviera were created. In summer the club has a great atmosphere. The very seventies-style décor is extremely kitsch and the music played there is a mixture of electro-house hits with classics from the 70s and 80s. Here is a tip for visitors: don’t come wearing jeans and trainers, you won’t be allowed in… In short, Le Byblos is a hotel which has been able to preserve its original character and now boasts the “Palace” label!
