Se baigner dans la Seine à Paris ? Plusieurs en rêvent et certaines photos du début du XXème siècle nous l’attestent, oui, il fut un temps où l’on se baignait bien dans le fleuve.
Est-ce encore possible aujourd’hui ? A moins d’être suffisamment insouciant, avec une santé de fer et portant toutes les protections nécessaires, je ne vous le recommande pas. Cependant, je vous suggère d’aller faire un tour dans le 13ème arrondissement entre la passerelle Simone de Beauvoir et le pont de Bercy pour découvrir la piscine Joséphine Baker qui entretient parfaitement l’illusion.
Ouverte en 2006, à l’occasion de la cinquième édition de Paris Plage, cette piscine flottante est amarrée au Quai de la Gare. Son bassin principal est au niveau de la Seine, et vous offre l’impression de vous baigner directement dans la Seine sans les conséquences qui pourraient en découler pour votre santé.
Malgré sa courte histoire, la piscine Joséphine Baker fut victime d’un incendie fin 2006 et faillit couler en novembre 2007. Elle est à nouveau ouverte au public le 21 juillet 2008 pour la plus grande joie des baigneurs. L’attente pour y entrer est longue. Mais, en cette saison, pendant les heures de travail de la majorité, vous pouvez tenter votre chance. Et la vue qu’elle propose sur les quais est incomparable même si ses 25 mètres de long et 10 mètres de large pourraient ne pas satisfaire les baigneurs les plus chevronnés.

Fancy a dip in the Seine in Paris? Plenty of people dream of doing just that, and certain early 20th century photos prove that there really was a time when people went swimming in the river. Is it still possible today, though? Unless you’re exceedingly carefree, have an iron constitution and have taken all the necessary protective measures, I wouldn’t recommend it. I can, however, recommend visiting the 13th arrondissement, where, between the Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir and the Pont de Bercy, you’ll find the Piscine Joséphine Baker, which is as close a reconstruction of the real thing as you could hope for.
Opened in 2006 as part of the fifth Paris Plage event, this floating swimming pool is moored to Quai de la Gare. The main pool is at the same level as the Seine and gives you the impression of swimming in the river itself, without all the potential health hazards.
Despite being quite a new installation, the Piscine Josephine Baker has already seen some hardship, suffering a fire at the end of 2006 and almost sinking in November 2007. It reopened to the public on 21 July 2008, to the delight of swimmers. There’s a long queue to get in, but at this time of year, when most people are at work during the day, it’s worth going along to try your luck. The pool boasts an unmatched view of the quays, although its size (25 metres long and 10 metres wide) may not be enough for more experienced swimmers.
