Lake Powell Resort

Le lac Powell au coeur de l’Arizona, l’un des plus grand lacs artificiels du monde peut être (en tout cas le 2eme plus grand des Etats Unis), comme je vous le disais en préambule de cette semaine américaine. 658 km², 300 km de long 40 de large, jusqu’à 150 m de profondeur, pas loin de 100 canyons, le fameux Rainbow Bridge, qui est à 8 heures aller retour de l’hôtel… Ce lac porte le nom du premier pionnier à descendre la rivière Colorado jusqu’au pacifique (John Wesley Powell). A cheval sur l’Arizona et l’Utah, le lac commença à se remplir en 1963, à la fin de la construction du Barrage de Glen Canyon. Il fut complètement rempli en 1980, et depuis fin 2000, la région subit une telle vague de sècheresse que le niveau du lac a baissé de 32 m.

Nous sommes logés au Lake Powell Resort, à nouveau au coeur touristique de l’endroit. L’hôtel possède quelques centaines de chambres toutes spacieuses et bénéficiant d’un confort sans ostentations. Pour plus de folie, vouspouvez choisir de loger sur les fameux « House Boats », ainsi vous serez les pieds dans l’eau. Nous ne dormirons qu’une nuit. Nous avons fait une très longue journée de bateau par un temps extraordinaire, nous avons vu des canyons magnifiques, la beauté de ce lac artificiel est époustouflante.

Lake Powell is at the heart of Arizona and is perhaps one of the largest man-made lakes in the world (it is the 2nd largest in the United States at any rate) as I mentioned in my introduction to this American week. It is 658 km², 300 km long and 40 wide, as much as 150 meters deep, not far from 100 canyons and the famous Rainbow Bridge, which is 8 hours there and back from the hotel…
This lake is named after the first pioneer to navigate the Colorado River all the way to the Pacific (John Wesley Powell). The lake overlaps the Arizona State border and spreads into Utah, and first began to fill up in 1963 after the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam. It had completely filled up by 1980 but, since the end of the year 2000, the region has seen so little rain that the water level has fallen by 32 meters.
We stayed at the Lake Powell Resort, again at the tourist heart of the site. The hotel has a few hundred spacious rooms with all the basic comforts. For something a bit more out of the ordinary, and in the centre of things, you could stay on one of the famous House Boats. We only stayed one night but we did spend a long day on a boat, in gorgeous weather, and we saw magnificent canyons. The beauty of this man-made lake is breathtaking.
