L’hôtel porte le nom de la rue qui l’accueille mais elle héberge aussi un théâtre du même nom. Inauguré en 1898, voilà un théâtre légendaire qui porta successivement les noms de « Théâtre Monsieur », « Théâtre des Mathurins nouveaux » ou encore « Théâtre de Sacha Guitry » C’est en 1905, que le maître de l’ironie, alors âgé de vingt ans, fit ses premiers pas, avec la comédie « Nono ». Ensuite, ce sont Georges et Ludmilla Pitoëff qui marqueront le lieu de leur très forte empreinte. Puis, plusieurs autres grands directeurs se succèderont, privilégiant, tour à tour, comédies de boulevard, grandes pièces du répertoire international ou créations contemporaines. La programmation embrassera, particulièrement, les oeuvres d’Oscar Wilde, de Jean-Paul Sartre ou de Marguerite Duras. Des artistes comme Gérard Philipe, Michel Auclair ou Maria Casarès se produiront sur cette scène mythique du théâtre parisien.
Mais, revenons en arrière… Je ne résiste pas, en effet, à la tentation, peut être un peu encyclopédique, de vous signaler que le Théâtre des Mathurins (et par conséquent la rue et donc l’hôtel …) doit son nom à une ruelle qui existait, déjà, au Moyen Âge. Elle desservait, depuis le XIIIe siècle, une ferme appartenant aux moines mathurins. Plus tard, Louis XVI et Marie-Antoinette ayant été inhumés dans le cimetière jouxtant la future rue des Mathurins, son propriétaire en offrira le terrain à la famille royale. En récompense, Louis XVIII accorda au petit-fils de ce brave propriétaire le privilège d’exploiter des théâtres hors de l’enceinte de Paris… D’où le Théâtre des Mathurins ! Comme quoi, certains cimetières mènent à tout à condition d’en revenir… Plus récemment, ce théâtre de 386 places bénéficia d’importants travaux de rénovation, particulièrement au niveau la scène et des machineries.
The hotel’s theatre…
The hotel is named after the street in which it is found, a street which is also the setting for a theatre of the same name. Inaugurated in 1898, it is a legendary theatre which was successively known as ‘Théâtre Monsieur’, ‘Théâtre des Mathurins nouveaux’ and ‘Théâtre de Sacha Guitry’. Concerning the latter, it was in 1905, that this master of irony, then just 20-years old, made his first stage appearance in the comedy ‘Nono’. After that, Georges and Ludmilla Pitoëff left a very strong imprint on this theatre. Then, several other great directors followed on from each other, each putting the emphasis on different theatre styles, from boulevard comedies to great international plays and contemporary creations. The theatre billed, in particular, the works of Oscar Wilde, Jean-Paul Sartre and Marguerite Duras and actors including Gérard Philipe, Michel Auclair and Maria Casarès performed on this legendary Parisian stage.
But let’s go back even further… At the risk of sounding like an encyclopaedia, I can’t resist the temptation to tell you that the Théâtre des Mathurins (and consequently the street and the hotel…) owes its name to a little street that existed back in the Middle Ages. In the 13th century it led to a farm belonging to the Mathurin monks. Later, after Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were buried in the cemetery next to the future Rue des Mathurins, its owner offered the land to the royal family. In return, Louis XVIII gave his permission to the grandson of this benevolent owner to manage the theatres outside of the inner circle of Paris… Hence the Théâtre des Mathurins! This just goes to show that some cemeteries lead to fortune provided that you come back from them… More recently, this theatre with 386 seats benefitted from major renovation works, especially concerning the stage and machinery.
