Chicago à Broadway

Lors de mon séjour aux Etats-Unis dont je vous ai récemment parlé, j’ai également eu l’opportunité d’assister à une représentation de la Comédie Musicale Chicago à Broadway. Assister à un spectacle à Broadway fait partie des indémodables lors de toute visite à New York qui se respecte. Cependant, la caractéristique de Chicago est qu’il s’agit du spectacle qui se joue depuis le plus d’années sur l’avenue mythique. En effet, 2015 est la 19ème année consécutive de représentation. La comédie a cependant été montée pour la première fois en 1975. A raison de 300 représentations minimum par an, le nombre total de représentation est étourdissant. Plus de 20 millions de spectateurs ont d’ailleurs déjà vu le spectacle.Tirée de la pièce de théâtre Chicago écrite par Maurine Dallas Watkins en 1926, elle-même tirée d’un fait divers de 1924, l’intrigue raconte le destin de deux femmes Roxie Hart et Velma Kelly, toutes deux accusées de meurtre et prêtes à tout pour éviter la peine capitale et… devenir célèbres.
La notoriété de la pièce dépasse les frontières du théâtre puisqu’un film en a été tiré en 2002. Il s’agit bien entendu de Chicago réalisé par Rob Marshall en 2002 avec les splendides Catherine Zeta-Jones et René Zellweger ainsi que le surprenant Richard Gere (Mr Cellophane).
La danse, l’ambiance jazzy des années 20, les magnifiques numéros musicaux contribuent à faire de Chicago un « must-see ».

La critique ne s’y est d’ailleurs pas trompée puisque la comédie a obtenu 6 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards et un Grammy, le public non plus, puisque les ovations ne se sont jamais arrêtées.

During my trip to the United States that I told you about recently, I also got the chance to see the musical Chicago on Broadway. Going to a show on Broadway is something that will never go out of fashion as part of any visit to New York worth its salt. The particular attraction of Chicago is that it is the longest running show on the legendary boulevard. Indeed 2015 is the show’s 19th consecutive year although it was first performed on stage in 1975. At a rate of at least 300 shows per year, the total number is mind-blowing. More than 20 million people have seen it already.
Adapted from the play Chicago written by Maurine Dallas Watkins in 1926, which itself was based on an incident that took place in 1924, the plot tells the story of two women, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, who are accused of murder and will stop at nothing to escape the death penalty…and become famous.
The show’s fame spread beyond the theatre when it was made into a film in 2002. I’m talking of course about the film Chicago directed by Rob Marshall with the magnificent Catherine Zeta-Jones and René Zellweger as well as a surprising Richard Gere (as Mr. Cellophane).
The dances, the jazz ambiance of the 20s and the wonderful musical numbers all make Chicago a must-see. The critics weren’t mistaken in their acclaim as the musical has won 6 Tony awards, 2 Olivier awards and a Grammy, and nor were the public as the standing ovations have just gone on and on.
