La semaine dernière au cinéma, j’hésitais entre « Coco avant Chanel » avec Audrey Tautou ou le dernier « OSS 117 » avec Jean Dujardin. J’ai tout d’abord pensé enrichir ma culture urbaine en privilégiant Coco Chanel. Mieux connaître ce que furent les premières années de cette femme osseuse enrobée d’amants me semblait attractif. C’est quand même « Elle » qui inventa la modernité à une époque peu propice aux grandes carrières féminines. Mais j’avais lu aussi, ici ou là, que le film d’Anne Fontaine ne tenait pas toutes ses promesses et que la lassitude s’installait vite. Presque rien, disait-on, sur le mauvais caractère et la personnalité volcanique de « Mademoiselle ». Trop de scènes bon chic bon genre à la tiédeur marketing concoctée pour « gagner du spectateur ».

De piètre humeur ce soir-là, j’ai finalement choisi OSS 117. C’était drôle, loufoque et très bien interprété par un Jean Dujardin au talent désormais indiscutable … Un film sans autre prétention que de nous divertir Charlotte, Olivier (un ami) et moi. Juste ce qu’il nous fallait.

Last week at the cinema, I was hesitating between going to see ‘Coco Before Chanel’ starring Audrey Tautou or the latest ‘OSS 117’ starring Jean Dujardin. Initially I thought about enriching my urban culture by choosing the film about Coco Chanel. I was quite tempted to find out more about the early years of this slender lady enveloped in lovers. After all it was she who invented modernity in an age when few women led a great career. But I had also read here and there that the film directed by Anne Fontaine does not live up to all its promises and that you soon lose interest. Apparently the film shows almost nothing of the infamous bad nature and volcanic personality of ‘Mademoiselle’ and there are too many well-meaning and well-mannered scenes as part of a marketing approach of ‘pull in the spectators’.
Being in quite a bad mood that evening, I ended up choosing OSS 117. It was funny, wacky and featured some great acting by Jean Dujardin whose talent no longer needs any introduction… It is a film with no other pretension than to entertain Charlotte, our friend Olivier and me. It was just what we needed.
