En rassemblant mille jouets venus du monde entier, l’exposition « Des jouets et des hommes » qui se tient au Grand Palais, du 14 septembre au 23 janvier 2012, est une magnifique réussite sur laquelle je voudrais m’attarder un instant. En effet, loin d’être un magasin de jouets « en grand », cette exposition donne à réfléchir et à rêver. Elle illustre magistralement l’histoire d’un objet qui, depuis toujours, fut un compromis entre le réel et l’illusion. Le jouet a toujours reproduit en miniature le « monde des adultes», avant de donner accès, aujourd’hui, à « l’imaginaire en lui même ».
Voilà donc une vaste épopée autour de thèmes comme les automates, le don, les animaux, les jouets de filles et de garçons. Si vous n’y trouviez pas ce que furent vos propres jouets c’est, sans doute, parce que vous n’auriez pas cherché assez longtemps ! Chez les filles, la poupée est reine. Dans l’Égypte ancienne, elle est figurine, destinée à incarner la femme. Elle devient petite fille, puis princesse. 360 habits griffés, faits par les plus grands couturiers français (Jean Patou, Lanvin, Vuitton…), les accompagnent. La cuisine de poupée, le lave-linge «comme maman», les dînettes précieuses ou en plastique semblent aider les filles à apprivoiser les arts ménagers (sic !).
Côté garçons, les jeux tournent autour des panoplies, de la construction, de la vitesse, de la performance. Les miniatures de voitures, de trains ou d’avions produites en série à la suite de grands exploits sont légion, comme le petit avion de Charles Lindbergh. À partir des années 1920, une littérature enfantine (La Semaine de Suzette, Babar ou Bécassine ) commence à imposer des figures qui n’appartiennent plus à l’univers adulte. Les comics américains, d’abord, et plus encore la télévision, déclencheront, ensuite, une avalanche de jouets avec leurs produits dérivés. Ils deviennent des biens de consommation comme les autres; et périssent, parfois, en même temps que le film ou la série dont ils sont issus… «Quitter ses jouets, c’est grandir», dit-on.
Alors, allez vite faire un tour au Grand Palais pour réveiller la part enfantine qui trépignait, mine de rien, en vous !
Of Toys and Men
I would like to take a moment to dwell on the hugely successful « Of Toys and Men » exhibition, taking place at the Grand Palais from 14 September to 23 January 2012, bringing together a thousand toys from around the world. Far from being a « large scale » toy shop, this exhibition gives food for thought and promotes reverie, magnificently illustrating the history behind an object which has always been at the crossroads of the real and the imaginary. Toys have always reproduced miniature versions of the « adult world » before providing today the key to the « imagination within ».
Here you’ll be presented with an epic tale covering areas such as automatons, the act of giving, animals and girls’ and boys’ toys. If you cannot find examples of your childhood toys, you definitely haven’t looked hard enough!
Dolls have pride of place for girls. In ancient Egypt they were figurines, designed to portray women, which developed into girls and then princesses. 360 designer pieces have been provided by the greatest French couturiers (Jean Patou, Lanvin, Vuitton, etc.) to present them. It would appear that play kitchens, washing machines « just like Mum’s », valuable or simply plastic tea sets help young girls to become familiar with (sic!) home making. For boys, the toys are centred on collecting, building, speed and performance. Countless series of miniature cars, trains and planes have been made following major exploits, such as Charles Lindbergh’s small aeroplane. From the 1920s onwards, children’s literature began to appear (La Semaine de Suzette or) and to establish characters which no longer belonged to the adult world.
Firstly the American comics and then, even more so, television, lead to an avalanche of toys and by-products. They became consumer goods like any other and, sometimes, died a death along with the film or series from which they came… as they say « part of growing up is leaving one’s toys behind ».
So, go and take a look at this exhibition at the Grand Palais and awaken the inner child in you which is secretly dying to come out!
