« Invention/Design. Regards croisés » au musée des Arts et Métiers

Une exposition surprenante et ambitieuse est à découvrir pendant encore quelques mois au musée des Arts et Métiers. « Invention/Design. Regards croisés » explore les liens entre design contemporain et histoire des inventions à travers 100 objets. Organisée en partenariat avec le studio de design Sismo, l’exposition s’organise autour de quatre thématiques communes aux inventeurs et aux designers : l’essentiel, l’audace, le contexte et la curiosité.

Les objets (certains mythiques et d’autres familiers) sont datés du XVIème au XXIème siècle et proviennent essentiellement des collections du musée. Le parcours est ponctué de vidéos, d’interviews, de documents d’archives, de dispositifs multimédia qui interpellent les visiteurs. L’exposition est passionnante dans la mesure où elle montre la part prise par les designers dans le processus de création. Ils doivent s’adapter à la fois au progrès technique et répondre aux attentes des consommateurs. Ils participent parfois même au processus de création de l’objet en amont.

La scénographie invite le visiteur à s’immerger totalement dans cet univers et à s’interroger sur la fidélité et l’apport du designer par rapport à son inventeur. Comme le déclare Antoine Fenoglio, designer chez Sismo et commissaire de l’exposition, «Le rôle du designer est de dessiner et de créer avec des pièces provenant d’autres objets avec une esthétique et une intelligence particulière. Mais on ne peut pas s’abstraire de ce qui a été fait par l’inventeur. Ce qu’il a fait perdure.»

“Invention/Design. Perspectives”
You still have a few months to visit the surprising, ambitious exhibition currently underway at the Musée des Arts et Métiers. “Invention/Design. Regards croisés” (“Invention/Design. Perspectives”) explores the links between contemporary design and the history of invention, through 100 objects. Organised in partnership with Sismo, a design studio, the exhibition is arranged around four themes shared by inventors and designers: essence, daring, context and curiosity.
The objects (some iconic, others mundane) come from a period ranging from the 16^th to the 21^st centuries and are mostly borrowed from the museum’s collections. Scattered throughout the visit are videos, interviews, documents from the archives, and multimedia installations which attract visitors’ attention. The exhibition is fascinating in the way it tracks the role designers play in the process of creation. They must adapt to both technical progress and consumer needs. Sometimes they even take part in the very first stages of the creative process.
The layout encourages visitors to immerse themselves completely in this world, and wonder about the designer’s faithfulness and contribution in relation to the inventor. As Antoine Fenoglio, Sismo’s designer and the curator of the exhibition, puts it: “The role of the designer is to design and create using parts from other objects with a specific aesthetic and intelligence. But it can never be separated from the inventor’s input. The legacy of his work remains constant.”
